How can I stop getting speeding tickets?

Asked by pallen123 (1519points) July 7th, 2009

I live in an eastern suburb of Cleveland and man, since moving here I’ve probably averaged 3 speeding tickets a year. I drive a Camry and I’m a pretty mellow person and driver and I can’t stand speeders on our residential street. So, when I’m driving in residential areas, I slow down to 20–25. The rest of the time I try my darndest to drive the speed limit, but occasionally my mind wanders, or I’m in a rush and I don’t realize I’m traveling 45 in a 35 or 35 in a 25, and bam, I get pulled over. It sucks! What can I do? Anyone had success with radar detectors? Do they really work and give you enough time to slow down?

get a radar unit.

Dog's avatar

I knew a fellow that swore by using a radar detector. Also keep in mind some roads are easier to speed on and are frequented by officers more than other areas. Perhaps taking a different route could help.

Just out of curiosity- what color is your Camry?

drive slower. watch your speed. listen to the sound of the engine.
also radar detectors are illegal. (in germany at least)

Stop speeding…

mzdesigns's avatar

dont stop when the cop puts on his sirens

pallen123's avatar

It’s a silver Camry. Very plain looking. The ‘drive slower’ and ‘stop speeding’ comments, although very creative, aren’t helpful. I’m very mindful of my speed 95% of the time. It’s the 5% during which I get caught. I would have to be neurotic or drive like a 90 year old to be an more vigilant about the speed I’m driving.

mzdesigns's avatar

ok maybe you just had a series of bad luck?

pallen123's avatar

So radar units work?

mzdesigns's avatar

only really expensive ones do, to some point.

Dog's avatar

The tickets you are getting- are they on the same stretch of road or randomly anywhere?

BBSDTfamily's avatar

For yours and everyone else’s safety, please stop letting your mind wonder and pay attention while you’re driving. That includes the posted speed limits. If you can’t keep up with how fast you’re driving that shows you really aren’t paying attention like you should be. Not even close.

Randy's avatar

Punch the cop next time he comes to your window. I guarantee he won’t write you a speeding ticket.

For real though, I just got my license suspended for speeding tickets. Once you start getting them it’s really hard to stop. Just try to pay attention to what your doing and use cruise control. It helps.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

Uh…....SLOW DOWN!!! You’re a slow learner, aren’t you?

mzdesigns's avatar

ride a bike?

ubersiren's avatar

I used to get them all the time. Now I’m anal about driving no more than 7 mph over the speed limit.

Tips:
*Drive in the middle lanes- cops tend to point radar from the outer lanes.
*Be extra careful driving downhill- Not only do you unintentionally go faster, but cops are more likely to radar downhill because it’s easier for them to catch up to you that way if they have to pull you over.
*Try to follow the speed of the traffic surrounding you. Also check tractor-trailers. They have radios and can hear the fuzz.
*Listen to slower tempo music
Just be more aware- make sure you don’t exceed 5mph over the limit at all times
*I’d also advise you to leave your house 10 minutes earlier so you don’t feel so rushed. I know it’s hard, but it’s worth it to avoid fines or worse.

pallen123's avatar

I’m getting tickets in different places. Part of the issue is where I live and work I regularly travel in and out of 7–8 different municipalities within a 5 square mile area. Each one of them is loaded with cops eager to hand out tickets.

mzdesigns's avatar

yep just wanna meet there quota’s for the month and fund them municipalities

ubersiren's avatar

I know… bitches.

Randy's avatar

I’ve paid them enough in the past year to buy at least 10 new patrol vehicles! ...Bitches is right.

buster's avatar

If you weren’t a criminal and doing things like speeding you wouldn’t get a speeding ticket.

DominicX's avatar

I have a radar detector (kind of a fancy one) because my dad loves gadgets like that and I wanted it on my car. I’ve used it and found that it works, but I’m not really a speed demon. I don’t usually go more than 5 over. How much faster are you going? It’s not that hard to avoid going 10 over, you know. Speeding is not an addiction that you need therapy for, you just need to control your speed more. It can be done.

We seem to have a thing in this country where we think we’re entitled to go faster because we’re late. That’s bullcrap.

pallen123's avatar

Yeah today I got a ticket going downhill, 42 in a 25mph commercial warehouse district. My office is there and I’ve driven that street for 2 years without incident. Til today.

jrpowell's avatar

The TomTom 720 is a GPS unit for your car that will alert you when you are speeding. It is cheaper than getting another ticket.

“However, if for some reason your concentration does lapse, this device includes a selectable speeding alert to keep you from accruing expensive tickets.”

filmfann's avatar

radar units tell you when the cop just caught you.
Also, police are starting to use lasar pointers that measure your speed, and the radar unit can’t detect that.
Slow the fuck down.

Thanks JohnPowell. TomTom looks pretty cool. I’ll check it out.

Judi's avatar

I would get a new car. Your car is probably similar to one that a bad guy drives and they are looking for any reason at all to harass him. When they find out it isn’t him they just give a ticket.
Also, keep your car clean and in good repair. For some reason they like to go after people who appear to least be able to pay for the ticket.

SeventhSense's avatar

Get a faster car or die trying to outrun the cops.

DrBill's avatar

I use Cruse Control and a TomTom 1. TomTom sounds an alarm if I am more than 5 MPH over the posted limit.

I have a radar detector, but around here they use an “instant on” radar, the detector only gives me a “you were just clocked” warning, so I quit using it. they also have a devise that tells them if you have a radar detector. If you get caught speeding with a RD, you will not get out of the ticket.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

Geez, you’ve gotten that many speeding tickets and you still haven’t figured out to watch your speed? You really are a slow learner. Your only option is to get a job at a donut store and keep a dozen or so in your vehicle at all times.

Not to brag, but I haven’t had a speeding ticket in about a decade. Does that mean I don’t speed? No, it means I pay attention to my surroundings and have pretty good idea where the cops like to sit. I usually run 5 to 10 miles over the limit when I do speed. Pay attention already, driving isn’t a right, it’s a privilege.

bostonbeliever's avatar

yeah, i’m gonna have to say you should stop speeding.
that or go so fast that you lose the cop car, and make sure to cover your rear license plate so that they can’t track you.

bostonbeliever's avatar

oh, or you could try bribing the police officer who pulled you over

SeventhSense's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra
LOL, I could see how that one would go down:
“Do you know how fast you were driving son?”
“Boston Cream officer?”

Dr_C's avatar

Pretty girls can flirt their way out of tickets sometimes… other than that… drive slower or get a radar detector.

YARNLADY's avatar

I’ve been driving for over a half century and I have only receive one speeding ticket, which I got the one and only time I every exceeded the speed limit.

I guarantee that if you drive at or under the posted or understood speed limit you will never receive a speed ticket.

msright1981's avatar

I was in your case about 5 years back when I was living in Knoxville Tennessee. Then I bought a good radar unit, which saved me from all the tickets. Though Radar detectors are never 100% accurate. They have a lot of false positive which mean you will be slowing out most of the time any way, but hey that still provide the purpose :).

sap82's avatar

Are you serious? Don’t speed. Also radar detectors are illegal in some places. I’d check that out first.

CMaz's avatar

Stop driving!

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@SeventhSense I speak from experience. My brother in law works as head cook 2rd shift at a Donut Delight store. A cop pulled him over late one night, and when my BIL rolled down the window to hand out his license, the odor of donuts rolled out, too. The cop asked if he had any donuts in the car. He said no, and the cop let him off with a verbal warning. I think keeping donuts in your back seat would work, or perhaps a car scent air freshener that smells like donuts. Hey, there an idea. quick, to the patent office!

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

IchtheosaurusRex's avatar

@ABoyNamedBoobs03 , that thing is a scam that is no longer being made (thankfully).

@pallen123, it is definitely worthwhile to invest in a radar detector. I would recommend the Passport 8500 X50 , which has good range in the deadly Ka band, and the best anti-falsing circuitry around. Learning how to use one of these things takes time. You get a lot of false signals from door openers and burglar alarms, so you have to train your ear to listen for the real thing. If you want to get really fancy, get the 9500 ix, which can “learn” false alarms and has a GPS capability to alert you about speed cameras and other automated devices.

Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia, D.C., and most of Canada. Use in other places can be a mixed blessing. I would not recommend using a windshield mount, as it makes the detector stand out. Use a visor clip instead.

MrGV's avatar

Valentine One

IchtheosaurusRex's avatar

@MrGeneVan , The Valentine One is highly touted for its sensitivity, but that also increases the number of false alarms you get. In most head to head tests, people favor the Escort models. No detector is a guarantee against tickets, but it is a tool, and you want one that you can get the most use out of.

SeventhSense's avatar

@MrGeneVan
That’s supposed to be the best detector I’ve heard. I may have to get one.

On Laws
Kahlil Gibran

You delight in laying down laws,
Yet you delight more in breaking them.
Like children playing by the ocean who build sand-towers with constancy and then destroy them with laughter.
But while you build your sand-towers the ocean brings more sand to the shore,
And when you destroy them the ocean laughs with you.
Verily the ocean laughs always with the innocent.

But what of those to whom life is not an ocean, and man-made laws are not sandtowers,
But to whom life is a rock, and the law a chisel with which they would carve it in their own likeness?
What of the cripple who hates dancers?
What of the ox who loves his yoke and deems the elk and deer of the forest stray and vagrant things?
What of the old serpent who cannot shed his skin, and calls all others naked and shameless?
And of him who comes early to the wedding-feast, and when over-fed and tired goes his way saying that all feasts are violation and all feasters lawbreakers?

What shall I say of these save that they too stand in the sunlight, but with their backs to the sun?
They see only their shadows, and their shadows are their laws.
And what is the sun to them but a caster of shadows?
And what is it to acknowledge the laws but to stoop down and trace their shadows upon the earth?
But you who walk facing the sun, what images drawn on the earth can hold you?
You who travel with the wind, what weather-vane shall direct your course?
What man’s law shall bind you if you break your yoke but upon no man’s prison door?
What laws shall you fear if you dance but stumble against no man’s iron chains?
And who is he that shall bring you to judgment if you tear off your garment yet leave it in no man’s path?

Strauss's avatar

@SeventhSense I’ll bet Old Mr. Gilbran never got a speeding ticket.

Anyway, I think his poem is about being bogged down in the laws of the world at the expense of one’s immortality.

I think the practicality of avoiding speeding tickets is about not getting bogged down in speeding fines at the expense of one’s driving privileges.

Edit for clarity

deni's avatar

i live in constant fear of speeding tickets. and there are so many “SAFETY CORRIDOR – FINES DOUBLED” areas near where i live, its stressful.

the only tip i have i got from my old boss who used to be a cop. he said your best bet of them not giving you a ticket after they pull you over is just to have everything ready for them and neat and give it to them when they come up so theres no shuffling around and looking for stuff. i dunno why, but thats what he said. i haven’t been pulled over since so i haven’t tested this out. the first two times i got pulled over though i remember saying “uhh is this the insurance thing? oh wait no hold on thats expired” LOL and now my license is expired. oh dear.

@Yetanotheruser
I think it was written for the dogmatic, judgmental and hypocritical nature in all of us.
And I definitely wouldn’t recommend it as a defense in any court of law

proudchief's avatar

+1 for Valentine One. Not very many false alarms in “smart” mode, and radar direction, type of signal, and number of signals received make it easy to identify false alarms. I’ve had mine for years and it’s saved me lots of $$$ in tickets and insurance. Best radar detector on the market, and the manufacturer will upgrade it to the latest technology (for a price).

kibaxcheza's avatar

get the like 10k paint job that absorbs the radar frequency…... ( doesnt help for laser type though)

get better luck

stop driving….

msright1981's avatar

ride a bicycle instead of a car. I doubt you can over speed with that.

IchtheosaurusRex's avatar

@msright1981 , I hit 57 MPH on my bicycle on a stretch of U.S. 50 outside of CaƱon City, CO, a while back. No cops lurking, though.

kibaxcheza's avatar

@IchtheosaurusRex you sir, are badass… i hit 30 on a flat once but thats about it =p

IchtheosaurusRex's avatar

@kibaxcheza , it’s on my bucket list to hit 60 MPH on a bike before I die. I hope, not right before.

DominicX's avatar

@IchtheosaurusRex

How do you know what speed you’re going on a bike? Because there’s this road in El Dorado County, California, called “Fountain Place Road” and it basically goes down the side of a mountain for a couple miles. I went down it part way and I was going insanely fast. But I had no idea what the MPH was.

IchtheosaurusRex's avatar

@DominicX , http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/SubCategory_10053_10052_200377_-1_200279_200295
Mine uses a magnetic pickup on the wheel. The really fancy ones use GPS.

@kibaxcheza
Yes it kind of sucks to get a 10k paint job only for it to be obsolete overnight.

kibaxcheza's avatar

@SeventhSense So then computer shopping in your eyes must really be a drag huh….

@IchtheosaurusRex Dude… Im game, once i get back to school, i will try my hardest to beat you to that speed…. my only thing is that ill be using an exercise bike so i cant use any kinda natural helpers =p

SeventhSense's avatar

@kibaxcheza
Holy difficult screen name:)
I don’t upgrade more often than every 4–5 years.

kibaxcheza's avatar

@SeventhSense Yeah, i dont have the money to get upgrading, but i do like to stay at least somewhat knowledgeable on the stuff coming out. like did you know that they are trying to integrate full dedicated physics engines on gaming computers? They used to have them as pci cards, but theyre trying to have them on board now. Its crazy. 3 years from now i bet there will be games so in depth that if youre a sniper you really will have to take weather conditions and distance into count….

but seriously just pay more attention

ive hit over 100 multiple times on 66 even ( if you life east coast you know thats askin for a ticket)

Kraigmo's avatar

Radar detectors work pretty well.
Never speed in residential areas.

When speeding on the highway or freeway, get in the habit of looking in your rearview every single time you pass an onramp. Make sure no cop just came on.

I routinely drive 80 MPH when safe, and have never received a ticket in the last 21 years. And that’s with no radar detector. But then again, the CHP in the areas i live (San Bernardino, LA, and San Diego) are pretty reasonable, and don’t usually pull people over for speeding under 90 MPH.

Noel_S_Leitmotiv's avatar

If your going to speed treat the act like any other potentially dangerous and risky activity (take it seriously)

No, beverages, smokes or phone calls. Both hands on the wheel and your undivided attention.

As ive mentioned before use the Valentine 1 radar detector. Dont bother with anything else. Mount it properly and learn to use it correctly.

Scan: Constantly be looking up and down the road. Check curves, hills, overpasses, shadows, etc.

Always keep in the rightmost lane you can (no need to look like your speeding any more than necessary). Pass only on the left of course. Slow some as you pass others as a courtesy.

Headlights off whenever possible. Cops are more likely to target a car with it’s lights on if surrounding cars don’t have them on. If your car has daytime running lights they can on some cars be disabled by pulling up the parking brake one click without problems.

Read other drivers actions: Ask yourself why theres so many brake lights up ahead. Could be the Five- Oh. This has saved me many times. Why did that car up ahead slam on the brakes and veer right?

Scan for Police infrastructure: Lines on the road for speed checking by aircraft. Lines on the road after an overpass. Check overpasses for cars stopped in the middle of the top. Look for paths in highway medians that the Fuzz use to U turn when speedtrapping.

Use common sense: Slow down for blind corners, when cresting hills, when entering a town or state.

Make an honest assesment as to whether your hardware’s up to the task of high speed driving and hard braking. Choose a car that is fast but doesnt look fast. That huge decklid spoiler might be keeping you ass planted to the pavent at 130 mph but it’s also saying ‘put the gun on me officer!’

Listen to your gut, learn to sense where cops will be. It can be done.

Noel_S_Leitmotiv's avatar

If your’re getting pulled over hide the radar detector. Use a wet finger to get rid of the suction cup marks.

Never admit you were speeding with an excuse. Apologise to the officer for having not paid attention to your speed. Swear you wont be so distrated in the future.

MerMaidBlu's avatar

I drive faster that 45 in a 35 lol…i know your pain lol. I’ve been in vehicles with the radar detectors and they work really well, you hear about the cop before you see him/her so you definitely have time to slow down. If you’re speeding a little when you see the cop DON’T HIT YOUR BRAKES!!! Just let of the gas ASAP and I haven’t gotten a ticket unless i’m still ten over when he clocks me, they’ll normally keep an eye on you but leave you alone or at least let you off with a warning.

If you hit your brakes not only will you get pulled over but you’ll get a ticket because they know that you’re aware of the fact that you broke the law

MerMaidBlu's avatar

On the radar thing, they’re illegal in a lot of states but you can still buy them, just don’t get caught with one in you’re car if you get pulled over :)

IchtheosaurusRex's avatar

@MerMaidBlu , Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia, DC, and most of Canada. They’re legal in most states, but it’s still a good idea to keep them stealth mounted on the sun visor, rather than brazenly attached to the windshield. Cops will pull you over more often if they see the thing.

Ron_C's avatar

I don’t believe that there is any justification for speeding tickets except to make money. There are only two speed related violations that are real hazards, driving too fast for conditions, and impeding traffic. Both should be heavily fined and drivers that commit either law, frequently, deserve jail time.

Of course, here in Pennsylvania we have the 6 point law. Every speeding violation gets a ticket with a fine ($132.50) an two or more points. When you reach six you have to go to driving class and retake the test. I was the only one over 25 in the class, Ironically, I had to speed to make it on time. If you pass the test you get 2 points off your record.

It took about 10 minutest to take the test, I would have aced it but I didn’t study the drunk driving section. Since I NEVER drink and drive, I didn’t think it applied to me. Unfortunately, almost half the questions were about drinking and driving.

john65pennington's avatar

Radar detectors do not work with lasar radar. save your money and lighten up on the gas pedal.

Ron_C's avatar

@john65pennington radar detectors have become superfluous because they rely of the spattering inherent in microwave signals. Laser detectors work but all they tell you is that you have been tagged. The detector may tell you that the car next to you has been tagged but again too late to save you from a ticket.

The best bet, as I have learned, is to leave early enough so that you don’t have to speed to get to your appointment.

AshlynM's avatar

Cruise control is always helpful. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination so you don’t need to rush.

Again, cruise control?

Ron_C's avatar

@AshlynM cruise control and a GPS that calculates the time you are to arrive at your destination have done more to stop my heavy foot than any poor slob in a police cruiser ever did. Besides, I think hiding in the bushes and scaring motorists is a degrading to a person that wants to serve and protect the population.

NomoreY_A's avatar

Give the cop a few Dead Presidents. And a little something for the wife. Worth a shot.

Kraigmo's avatar

It’s ironic people are suggesting cruise control.
It’s safer to manually speed at 80 than to Cruise Control at 70. (I realize there’s exceptions).
The problem with cruise control is that it disables your ability to flow with traffic. Your speed should constantly vary depending on changing conditions. You should never be within 3 seconds of the car in front of you. But you also should never be blocking anyone behind you. Unless you have a car within 3 seconds ahead of you, or an impending slowdown.

Judi's avatar

@Kraigmo, my new car has active cruise and will slow down on its own if you get to close to the car in front of you. It will also tell you to take a rest if you have trouble staying between the lines. It’s awesome.

Kraigmo's avatar

@Judi so that leads to the big question: Will your active cruise control speed up if someone is behind you and no one is in front of you?

Judi's avatar

@Kraigmo, no, I have to push the pedal for that
