Could someone invent an aftermarket accessory for electric cars?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33160points) 1 month ago

..that would make sounds like an internal combustion engine revving up? (Like a drag racer getting ready to take off)

How hard would it be to synch the sound to the accelerator pedal so the sound was appropriate to the acceleration? Do Teslas (and others) have APIs that let you query the acceleration software?

Do electronic cards have enough power to supply juice to amplifiers and speakers mounted on the outer frame?

Check out the fully all electric Ford Mustang Mach-E.

EVS and hybrids already have speakers that generate “noise” when the vehicle is moving slower than 19 mph. My Honda CRV Hybrid sounds like Harry Potter’s Mermaid Song

I think electric vehicles should stay noiseless. This will teach people to not stare at the phone when walking across the road. Those that refuse to learn, Darwin will take care of.

Well, yes and no @raggie. I turned around once and got the shock of my life by a noiseless car. I wasn’t on my phone.

It shouldn’t need an accessory device – the cars should be able to use whatever sound data . . . but most don’t allow users to upload/replace the sound files used. I think the car companies and/or laws are too paranoid about responsibility for people getting hit by a car using another sound, etc . . . sigh.

(To be fair, I think if you could, it would be a popular choice to put in silence. And some people might choose sounds that no one would think was a vehicle until too late. Etc. )

On the other hand, I guess if you did have a separate accessory, it would be adding a sound, so that wouldn’t tend to be a problem. I don’t expect it’s very easy to get real-time data from the car about it’s current accelerator input, though.

Here’s a real Mustang 5.0 sound on a Mustang Mach-E.

If you exceed 50 mph, the Mustang Mach-E could start playing random sounds from the chase scene from Bullitt.

@Tropical_Willie yes, the mustang sounds in that video are what i was thinking. But for average cars, not Mustangs.

I’m going to opine that we should never open such a Pandora’s box.

People will quickly make their cats sound like screaming cats, or farts.

Admittedly. The thought of the fart sounding car…..thrills me…

elbanditoroso's avatar

@MrGrimm888 If I can think of it, then others can too. Pandora’s box is wide open.

^Seeing how people express themselves online, has me expecting some wild stuff.

I’ll probably be mowed down by a very colorful and loud, self driven vehicle.

Fart cars, would ruin everything.
I can’t keep a straight face, thinking about fart cars.

Many years ago I saw a news report on electric cars that were being tested. One of the comments in the report was the lack of noise and that it was a safety hazard, because pedestrians could not hear the car coming. They talked about giving the driver the choice of different engine sounds, like you could pick a Camaro sound or Corvette or maybe a Malibu, lol, if it was a Chevy of some sort. I don’t remember if they could use sounds from luxury brands like Ferrari. Then, when cars started hitting the market, I was surprised they had no sound.

@MrGrimm888 Fartmobiles. The DMV can charge extra, like for vanity plates.

^^ Like what… SILENT BUT DEADLY ? <rolls eyes>

boys will be boys

So… an electric car that employs gas?

elbanditoroso's avatar

I’m exhausted thinking of the possibilities.

Forever_Free's avatar

Just wait till the EV Harley’s hit the road. They have speakers to make the sound for them.

Zaku's avatar

@smudges That’s the bumper sticker . . .

All electric cars should emit vehicle sounds from the Jetsons cartoon. All other options are wrong.
